It's funny how until Nico's coach started talking a few weeks ago people really didn't think of him as a 200ft player. Not just fans either. Scouting reports seem to have said the same thing. I don't have an issue with taking the coach at his word but it's just odd that few scouts seemed to acknowledge his supposed strong defensive play.

Scouts being too picky? Coach being too much of a cheerleader?

I think the point is not that he's going to step in and be the next Bergeron but that inspite of everyone talking about his offensive gifts he remains extremely committed to learning the defensive part of the game. While I don't think he steps in to a shut down role by any means I think he is someone who will work hard defensively every play even if he makes mistakes. I also think he's someone who within a few years in the nhl will grow to be able to take on top lines and give it as good as he gets it.

Hard to say, but his coach lavished praise on his two-way game, saying that Hischier is similar to Pavel Datsyuk in two-way awareness and similar to Henrik Zetterberg with the puck on his stick.

Bill, Can you say a little more about Bryz's views on youth hockey programs in the US vs Russia?

I disagree that people haven't even thinking of Nico as a 200ft player. That element to his game was there all year. It's the fact that he had to be THE GUY offensively in every sense of the phrase. He would sacrifice some of that stellar defensive play but it's always been there.

Wow, I forgot about Picard as a prospect. It sure hasn't been a great track record of developing dmen so far. I can see Hischier playing wing his rookie year and Patrick starting right away at center. I am so ready for the off-season to begin.

In a nutshell, he thinks they're much better in Russia (or Canada).

He sure is, and that was even with him saying that expecting Hischier to equal to Datsyuk in offensive creativity would be an unfair bar to set (as if comparing him offensively to Zetterberg isn't just a wee bit of pressure in its own right).

Chuck Knoblauch and Orel Hershiser were great baseball players.
We have a coach named Knoblauch and may draft a guy who's name is almost spelled
like Hershiser...coincidence/conspiracy theory = CUP

I think they'd lose Laughton or Cousins. In Draft, I still think Devils take Nolan Patrick and Flyers then take Hischier.

Is the difference between P.Kane and JVR at 1 -2 a bigger one vs the difference between this years 1 and 2 or are these two truely 1A-1b?

It's a 1A, 1B thing this year. In 07, it was Kane, and a step down to the next tier.

Yes, that was a bigger difference although JVR always showed flashes where he looked like he'd put it all together and become a superstar rather than just a good player.

Was just watching the Bryz segment from Nashville other day. He's a riot and truly a joy to watch. I met Bryz at (I believe) flyers home opener this year against the Ducks. Him and his family were supporting the ducks and he was just going back and with fans "don't Hef to be mad at me."

It's neck and neck for me. The gap between Kane and JVR was and remains huge. (frank)ing pigeon.

Gadjovich sound like an intriguing prospect. Maybe not if they pick 44 but as a guy you move up with the 3rd /4th rounders for. Even if he had Suzuki as a linemate that many goals means the kid can bury them.

Some Bryz's aren't meant to be caged; their feathers are just too bright.
